Here are some of the memorable moments from today, Day One of the International LCT Show at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas:
Ford's limousine/livery manager Doug Walczak presented "Ford's Sustainability Initiatives" focusing on alternative fuel vehicles that the industry can consider, such as the 2009 Mariner Hybrid. Audience members such as Charly Horky of CLS Nevada and several New York City-based operators expressed their deep concerns over having the right kinds of fleet vehicles that will meet upcoming regulations and client expectations. New York operators are especially concerned about the Taxi & Limousine Commission's upcoming rules on mileage that will make Town Cars unavailable to black car opertors, who must acquire vehicles that get 25 mpg or more starting Jan. 1. Walczak thanked everyone for sharing and encouraged an ongoing dialogue; he says that while Town Car is not going hybrid and will go off the market after the 2010 model year, there are other Ford product plans that will be good for the industry, but he can't yet share those details.
NLA Executive Director Patricia Nelson welcomed ILCT newcomers at a lunch reception for first-time attendees. There were about 300 people attending the meeting, more than last year. Nelson also celebrated St. Patrick's Day with her green jacket.
Keynote Speaker Vince Poscente showed the audience how he speed skated down a steep hill during the Olympics. The audience cheered for his performance video and laughed at many of his jokes. He talked about four ski factors that matter for business success - alignment, agility, aerodynamics, and doing something because you love to have fun.
The exhibit hall opened up at 4:30 and was packed with operators, booths, vehicles, and industry coachbuilders and suppliers. Besides a record 4,000 people expected to attend this year, there are more booths and vehicles being displayed this year than ever before.
Krystal showed off a few silver limousines to celebrate its 25 years in the industry.
