One Good Thing About NYC MPG Rules

Companies in the "luxury limousine" category under the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission rules don't have to add vehicles next year that get at least 25 mpg, even though "black car" operators certainly have to do this. There is one benefit of moving toward high mileage fleet vehicles, though.

Eduard Slinin, president of Brooklyn-based Corporate Transportation Group, says his company is adding 20 to 30 Toyota Camry hybrids to its fleet each week. CTG is in the "black car" category and has 1,850 vehicles in its multi-brand fleet. Drivers are spending about $15 a day on gas, versus Town Car drivers, who are spending $70 to $80 per day, he says. In September 2007, CTG started moving in this direction – clients had been asking about "green" cars, and gas prices were spiking up.
