Toughing It Out At The Trump Taj

First, the obvious: I am very biased toward LCT Magazine. Second, let's all agree, that when this indusry convenes in a big way, it's a big deal. Third, on-the-ground attendance estimates veered wildly all over the place, so I won't even go there. But I'm relieved to report that I did see people who own limousines. I can say I counted about 400-450 people at the Monday state of the industry presentation and at least the same amount at the George Foreman keynote speech on Tuesday.

The open secret about this industry is that it's full of two-timers, business people who come to both LCT and LD events, and read both magazines. That's just business, nothing personal. In this economy, networking and promoting oneself to the max is paramount, and you can't be too picky about the venues. But if there's one fact everyone can agree on, it's that given this declining economy and once-in-a-lifetime financial chaos, we should be encouraged that hundreds of operators and suppliers can gather in one place and cut some deals, swap some tips, and renew friendships. We all want this industry to be healthy and vibrant, and survive the current malaise with minimal damage. Better to have an industry capable of supporting two magazines and two trade shows than one or none at all. Competition brings challenge, and challenge encourages excellence.

Speaking of excellence, that's why it's even more important to attend the International LCT Show in Las Vegas, Jan. 26-28, 2009. Whether you are a fan of LCT, LD, or you've mastered the game of two-timing both, you can't afford to miss this show. Especially, now. This year, it goes much deeper than a marketing or sales pitch. The limousine and chauffeured transportation industry will be facing unprecedented economic, political, and regulatory challenges headed into 2009. Whether you are an operator, supplier, or coachbuilder, we all need to rub shoulders, share information, learn new tricks, and sip some more cocktails at this difficult time. See you in a few months.
