HOOKED ON MORONICS: First reports show the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission is aggressively enforcing its new set of rules on use of electronic equipment among for-hire vehicles operators.
WHAT ABOUT THE FACTS? Drivers are even getting busted for using hands-free communication devices. Too bad the regulators didn't look at the facts in their zeal to ban even the Bluetooth and hands-free options: A driver who is texting and emailing is 23 times more likely to be in an accident than a driver not using any electronic equipment, whereas a Bluetooth user is only 1.5 times more likely to be in one, according to a distracted driving study by Virginia Tech. Bottom line: Bluetooth is relatively safe. -- M.R.
