LONG WAY TO GO: BMW is offering a sneak peek of -- get this -- a small, luxury electric vehicle by 2013! Well, excuse us for yawning and smirking. . .
But for the last time: SMALL DOES NOT = LUXURY. You can put a luxury label on a small car, but that doesn't make it luxurious. No chauffeured client will want to ride in a small, luxury electric vehicle unless forced to do so.
So here's a tip to all the green vehicle makers and carbon-counting enthusiasts: Don't bring a "luxury" electric vehicle to the table until: 1) It's as big as a Lincoln Town Car; 2) It delivers the same range, speed, and acceleration of a full-sized V-8; 3) It costs the same as a fossil fuel model; 4) Fueling options are about as convenient as pulling into a Chevron station anywhere in the U.S; and 5) You can meet standards 1-4 without asking for or spending one taxpayer penny.
So far, green vehicles just don't match up on one or more counts. Keep trying. And we can't say it enough: NO SACRIFICES.
