JIM LUFF: Our Season Has Arrived

The holidays bring icing on the business cake.

I love the holidays. There are so many wonderful things about the holiday season to enjoy: Family, parties, presents, lots of food and of course the increase in revenue!

The revenue faucet is turned wide open this time of year. There are holiday light tours, corporate holiday parties, winter formals, and travelers needing to get to and from the airport.

The season has already kicked off for me. I say this partly because I came home Friday night and found our home had been magically transformed from Fall decorations to the beautiful Christmas tree, poinsettias, garland and lights everywhere. Yes, it is a little early isn’t it? However, my wife and I plan to spend Thanksgiving with Christine Bennett of Showcase Limousine in Boise, Idaho. We want our home to be decorated when we return, and it will look nice for our house guest taking care of the pets while we are gone.

While being ready for the holidays at home was exciting, it wasn’t nearly as exciting as the $2,400 order I took today from a large oil company for their holiday party. The party isn’t even in my service area. In fact, It is two hours away. The party planner is a Bakersfield, Calif.-based company, as we are. Where she goes, we go, and she told them we are worth the money. I love that! We also work with a concert promoter that insists on the same thing. We did four weeks of concerts in Palm Springs and that is five hours away from us. But he won’t use any local providers and won’t let me farm out knowing how good we are.

I followed up my $2,400 order with a $1,900 order from another company and then it hit me that the season has arrived and I think it’s going to be a good season. I hope that nasty recession will depart with 2010 and 2011 will see our industry return to some near resemblance of what it used to be.

It is probably to early to say this but I’m going to do it anyway — Happy Holidays!
