Ford
announced recently that it had received EPA certification for a new engine in its best-selling Explorer: a turbocharged four-cylinder called EcoBoost. A previous LCT blog post covered the EcoBoost and asked if
V-6 will be the new V-8, but the new 2.0-liter four-cylinder seems to be competing well with its V-6 alternative. In fact,
it cranks out 270 lb-ft of torque, which is15 lb-ft more torque than the 3.5-liter V-6 Explorer. And the magic number: 28 mpg on the highway. Ford’s innovation is a sign that vehicles can meet the challenges of greater fuel economy without necessarily having to be hybrid or
electric. – Michael Campos, LCT assistant editor
